A Macerator (aka Grinder) pump is designed to remove foul sewage from a property by breaking or cutting up solids to form a liquid or very fine slurry. They are typically used in systems where using gravity to assist the drainage of the sewage isn’t available. For example in an underground toilet/washroom. Therefore the “maceration” using large blades makes the solids almost non-existent and the liquid or slurry can be pumped horizontally or vertically to the mains sewer. A macerating pump cannot run dry so a macerator pump typically sits in a tank with an automatic set up so the liquid in the tank reaches a certain level, the pump kicks in.
